THRive - Strengthening Nutrition Delivery through Take-Home Rations
The Take-Home Ration (THR) component of India’s Supplementary Nutrition Programme under POSHAN 2.0 and Saksham Anganwadi is a key intervention aimed at improving the nutrition of children under three, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Rooted in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, which was expanded in 2008–09 to establish 1.4 million Anganwadi Centres (AWCs), THR has progressively evolved to meet nutritional standards. In recent years, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has introduced guidelines to fortify THR with essential micronutrients and, as of April 2025, limit the use of added sugars, salts, preservatives, and synthetic additives to enhance dietary quality. With updated norms under the National Food Security Act and POSHAN 2.0, there is a growing need to assess current THR practices and develop effective, cost-efficient state-level models that ensure alignment with these revised standards.
